Federico Valverde and Marco Asensio score the goals as Real Madrid record a 2-0 victory over RB Leipzig in the Champions League.

Real Madrid have extended their winning run at the start of the 2022-23 campaign to eight matches due to a 2-0 success over RB Leipzig in the Champions League.

Los Blancos had to be patient against an impressive Leipzig side, but the European scored twice in the final 10 minutes through Federico Valverde and Marco Asensio to move onto six points in Group F.

As well as five games in La Liga and the UEFA Super Cup, Carlo Ancelotti's side have now won their opening two Champions League matches of this season.

Leipzig had a fine chance to take the lead inside five minutes when Emil Forsberg released Christopher Nkunku into a shooting position, but the attacker was denied by a smart save from Thibaut Courtois.

The lively Nkunku then had a penalty shout in the 11th minute when he went down under the challenge of Nacho, but the referee waved away the away side's protests, before Forsberg steered wide of the home side's goal in the 21st minute after smart work from Timo Werner.

Aside from a Luka Modric effort that drifted wide, Real Madrid offered little in the first half, but Leipzig continued to look threatening, with Nkunku again being denied by Courtois just before the 30-minute mark.

Real Madrid had a golden chance to make the breakthrough in the 72nd minute through Vinicius Junior, but the Brazilian saw his close-range effort saved by Peter Gulacsi before Asensio lifted the rebound over.

Los Blancos were not to be denied, though, and finally broke the deadlock in the 80th minute, with Valverde picking out the bottom corner after smart work from Vinicius.

Ancelotti's side were not finished, though, and scored a second in the first minute of additional time at the end of the 90, with Asensio collecting a pass from Toni Kroos before finding the right side of the net.

Leipzig had their moments during a tense affair, but the Bundesliga outfit's lack of a cutting edge cost them, with the visitors sitting bottom of Group F with zero points to show from their two games.
