Sunderland manager Gus Poyet has insisted that Emanuele Giaccherini has a future at the club following the Italian's latest injury setback.
It was revealed on Tuesday that Giaccherini is set to miss the rest of the season after undergoing ankle surgery, but Poyet believes that the attacking midfielder can become a key player for the Black Cats when he returns to full fitness.
"He can still make a big impact at this club when he's fit. If he comes back next season in the way he started this one, he is going to play regularly," the Uruguayan told reporters.
"I'm telling you he can be impressive and I'm not just saying that because he's out. He has moved to another level and has adapted. He is stronger, more clear-minded and we will see that when he is fit."
Injuries have restricted Giaccherini to just 10 appearances in all competitions this season.
