Nine-man Real Madrid see off Valencia

A 1-1 draw on the night sees Real Madrid beat Valencia 3-1 on aggregate in the quarter-finals of the Copa del Rey.

Real Madrid have reached the semi-finals of the Copa del Rey with a 3-1 aggregate victory over Valencia.

Madrid took a 2-0 lead going into the second leg at the Mestalla, where a 1-1 draw was enough to see them progress.

The visitors went ahead a minute before the break as Karim Benzema collected Xabi Alonso's pass in the area before thumping the ball home.

Madrid were reduced to 10 men seven minutes after the restart when Fabio Coentrao picked up a second yellow card for a handball outside the area.

Valencia took full advantage of the resulting free kick as Tino Costa's strike flew past Antonio Adan.

Despite a successful result for Madrid, Angel di Maria's late red card for kicking out at Joao Pereira saw the night end on a sour note for Jose Mourinho's side.
