Sebastian Vettel pressed for new Kimi Raikkonen deal?

Sebastian Vettel insisted that Ferrari keep Kimi Raikkonen for 2017, according to a report.

Sebastian Vettel insisted that Ferrari keep Kimi Raikkonen for 2017, according to a report.

The Italian team had openly contemplated replacing the ageing Finn, with Force India driver Sergio Perez apparently at the top of the list.

Yet when asked if he was surprised when Ferrari re-signed Raikkonen, Perez told Auto Motor und Sport: "Actually no. I expected they would keep him.

"Life goes on. I will continue to prove that I'm ready for a top team."

Told that Ferrari appears to have gone for the 'safe' option with the 2007 world champion, Perez did not disagree.

"The top teams sometimes look for other things, like stability or peace in the team. But I'm not a team boss and so it's difficult for me to comment on their choices," he said.

The Times claims that Ferrari's de-facto number one driver Vettel had a lot to do with his friend Raikkonen being retained.

"Yes, it is a shame none of the youngsters are getting a chance but we know why, don't we?" a source close to Ferrari boss Maurizio Arrivabene reportedly said.

"Sebastian is the reason why."

The 2016 championship continues next weekend with the Hungarian Grand Prix.
