Lewis Hamilton backs "sensational" London street race

Lewis Hamilton says that a Formula 1 race around the streets of London would be a "sensational" event.

McLaren driver Lewis Hamilton has given his support to plans for a Formula 1 race around the streets of London.

Hamilton and McLaren teammate Jenson Button unveiled a four-minute video outlining a possible route that would start on The Mall and take in landmarks such as Buckingham Palace, Piccadilly Circus and Trafalgar Square at the Royal Automobile Club on Pall Mall.

"A grand prix here would be the best thing in the world, the biggest event, sensational," said 2008 world champion Hamilton.

The 27-year-old said that he would be honoured to help out in designing the circuit, which at the moment is little more than a concept.

He added: "[The track designers] never approach drivers to have any input into the design of circuits.

"But I would be very, very open to help in any way if they are planning to do it, to give advice on curves and corners and parts we should be going through. It would be insane."

F1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone has also expressed his desire to have a race in the English capital.
