Sergio Perez's father lost consciousness shortly after the Red Bull driver had a high-speed crash towards the end of the Azerbaijan Grand Prix.

Perez, 34, walked away without injury, but his father, Antonio Perez Garibay, a well-known politician, was discovered unconscious in the bathroom of his Mexico City home soon after the incident.

"The incident occurred following his son's impact during the Azerbaijan GP in a collision with driver Carlos Sainz," Perez senior's press office stated.

The 65-year-old politician was quickly taken to hospital, where he is now reported to be in a "stable condition" after suffering from what appeared to be a pre-heart attack.

"Everything happened after the accident," Perez Garibay told the Mexican media outlet Medio Tiempo.

"They are already checking my heart to see why I fainted."
