The world number 830 followed up his opening-round 68 with a three-under-par 69 to open up a lead over England's Ross Fisher.
Fisher recorded six birdies in a round of 67 to put himself in contention, with five players a shot further adrift on four-under-par.
Bo van Pelt is four off the lead on three-under-par, but fellow American Dustin Johnson dropped off the pace after a round of 74.
