The American finished the first round in 65 strokes for a final score of six-under-par to edge out his compatriot Brian Harman.
Harman came in second with 67 strikes for a score of four-under-par, while three of his other countrymen were tied in third place.
Tag Ridings, Brendan Steele and Harris English all finished at three-under with 68 strokes.
Briton Luke Donald came in joint-14th with 11 other golfers after finishing the round with a score of one-under-par.
