Figures from the social networking website show that England's defeat sparked 128,000 tweets per minute, while Leicester City's shock Premier League title win caused the second-biggest spike of the year in the UK with 107,000 tweets a minute.
Rounding off the top three was Daniel Sturridge's late winner for England to seal a 2-1 triumph over fellow home nation Wales in the group stage of the Euros in the summer.
Leicester's 'Champions of England' message after winning the title was the most retweeted sport-related post sent globally in 2016, while the Rio Olympics topped the trends.
