Steven Gerrard paid tribute to the 96 Hillsborough victims after he helped Los Angeles Galaxy beat Houston Dynamo on Friday.
The former Liverpool captain was not in attendance for the final memorial service hosted at Anfield on Thursday due to his commitments in Major League Soccer.
Gerrard, whose cousin Jon-Paul Gilhooley was one of the youngest of the Liverpool fans that died in the 1989 disaster, wore a black armband to mark the 27th anniversary of the tragedy while playing in LA Galaxy's 4-1 win over Houston Dynamo.
"It was a very emotional night for me tonight with the Hillsborough memorial back home," the Liverpool Echo quotes Gerrard as saying.
"I asked the referee if I could wear an armband to salute everyone back home and pay my respects. It was emotional night and that's why the three points are extra special."
The midfielder recently spent a month out of action with a calf injury.
