Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal miffed by 'inarticulate' Wayne Rooney

Louis van Gaal confesses that he is unable to have a conversation with Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney due to his thick Liverpudlian accent.

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has admitted that he has communication problems with Wayne Rooney - but only because he cannot understand him.

Netherlands-born Van Gaal quipped that the 29-year-old's Liverpool accent has caused conversational issues between the pair.

"When I speak, I am well articulated," he told RTL4.

"If you put Wayne Rooney here in the seat, and you start talking to him, do you think people can understand Wayne Rooney? You simply can't understand what he says."

The Dutchman, 64, had revealed earlier that Rooney - who reached 50 England goals on Tuesday to break Sir Bobby Charlton's all-time record - was one of the five best players that he has ever coached.

The Red Devils host Liverpool at Old Trafford on Saturday evening.
