Argentine footballer Franco Nieto has reportedly died in hospital after being allegedly attacked by rival supporters in a melee which broke out during Sunday's match.
Nieto, who represented third-tier club Tiro Federal, was rushed to hospital when a game against Chacarita Juniors was abandoned 15 minutes prior to the final whistle after eight players were sent off.
Police chief Fabian Bordon told TN television that "a player from the opposing team, an assistant coach and a hooligan" were part of the group who attacked Nieto during the incident.
The footballer's nephew Pablo told the station: "People came to insult him. They kicked him and punched him. He tried to defend himself but he was struck violently in the head. He was operated on Tuesday and died today."
Tiro Federal were leading 3-1 when the match was abandoned.
