Man gets 10-month prison sentence for match-fixing

A Croatian man has been sentenced to 10 months in prison for playing his part in a match-fixing scandal.

Milan Sapina will not be granted probation after he was found guilty by a German court of making significant sums of money on fixed football matches in Turkey and Austria.

Bochum district court judge Markus van den Hovel is quoted by ESPN as saying: "Such bets destroy the sport, as results are no longer down to the sporting performance but to the highest stake."

The 47-year-old's lawyers have stated that they will appeal the sentence.
