Alexander Ovechkin's father suffered a heart attack shortly after Russia's game against Slovakia in the men's ice hockey at the 2014 Winter Olympics.
However, the 28-year-old Washington Capitals winger was not informed until after the host country's quarter-final defeat to Finland on Wednesday.
"His father (Mikhail) had a heart attack while he was in Sochi," the Japan Times quotes Sergey Kocharov, director of communications with Ovechkin's NHL team, as saying.
"Ovechkin's father suffered the heart attack shortly after Russia's game against Slovakia. But he (Alexander) was not informed until after the elimination game against Finland.
"He is with his father right now. He will remain with him. We're taking it day by day."
Russia have won 26 medals at the Sochi Games so far.
