Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg has told convicted rapist Ched Evans to leave Great Britain to rebuild his football career.

The 25-year-old has been training with former club Sheffield United - where he had been contracted prior to his conviction - following his release from prison last month.

However, the Blades have found themselves under intense pressure to cut all ties, with Olympian Jessica Ennis-Hill stating that she wants her name removed from a stand at Bramall Lane if they re-sign him.

Clegg recently warned United to "think long and hard" about the decision, but says that he would not have an issue with Evans plying his trade for a club overseas.

Speaking on his LBC radio show, he said: "Left entirely to me, I wouldn't let him train. Maybe he could play for a club abroad for a while before coming back."

The club have since seen television presenter Charlie Webster and businesswoman Lindsay Graham resign from their roles as patrons in protest of allowing Evans to train with them.

Evans was found guilty of raping a 19-year-old woman in 2012 and handed a five-year prison sentence.
