Petition calls for Sierra Leone sprinter Jimmy Thoronka to be allowed to stay in UK

An online petition gathers almost 60,000 signatures calling for the government to allow Sierra Leone sprinter Jimmy Thoronka to stay in the UK.

A petition has been created asking the government to allow Sierra Leone sprinter Jimmy Thoronka to stay in the UK after allegedly refusing to return to Africa after his family died of Ebola.

The 100m runner has been living rough in London after disappearing shortly after competing at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow last summer.

According to the Daily Star, Thoronka was arrested on Friday for allegedly overstaying his visa and after applying for asylum was released by the authorities.

Since then, almost 60,000 people have signed an online petition calling for the athlete to be granted permission to stay in the country, and more than £23,000 has been raised via crowdfunding site GoFundMe for Thoronka.
