Medics: 'George North should have been taken off against England'

Wales winger George North should have been taken off for concussion during their 21-16 defeat to England, the medical team admits.

The medic who deemed Welsh winger George North fit to continue against England on Friday has admitted that he made a mistake and should have taken North off due to concussion.

North suffered two blows to the head during Wales's 21-16 defeat to England in the opening round of the Six Nations, but he was cleared to return to the action despite being knocked unconscious in the second half.

Medic Prav Methena told BBC Sport: "Having seen it since, he should definitely have been removed. At that moment it was clear to see that he had a momentary loss of consciousness and, because of that, irrespective of him having no signs or symptoms, we've been dealing with George North as a concussion. We've seen where our protocols need to improve."

Methena said that he didn't see the incident and was swayed by North's correspondence at the side of the pitch, before adding that the 22-year-old may play against Scotland on Sunday.

"Today he has been evaluated and he has shown no signs of any concussion and, because of that, he's started his return-to-play protocol already and there's been no issues. He has to go through that process for the rest of the week, having a step-by-step increase in his activity," he said.

North has scored 21 tries in 49 games for his country.
