Gold for Francesca Halsall in 50m freestyle

Team England swimmer Francesca Halsall wins Commonwealth Games gold in the 50m freestyle ahead of Australian sisters Cate and Bronte Campbell.

Francesca Halsall has won Commonwealth Games gold in the 50m freestyle on Saturday evening, setting a Games record time of 23.96s on the way.

Despite setting the Games record in the semi-final as well, Halsall did not enter the race as the favourite but successfully saw off Australian sisters Cate Cambpell and Bronte Campbell.

Cate Campbell, who took silver in the end, finished strongly but the Team England swimmer held on firmly to take the gold medal which keeps her country top of the standings.

Halsall's compatriot Amy Smith also swam in the final, but was unable to get into the medal positions.
