Team England's Luke Greenbank has narrowly missed out on a medal in the final of the men's 100m backstroke at the Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast.

The 20-year-old - champion in the event at the European Games in Baku three years ago - was in last place at the time of the split but powered back with an impressive sprint finish in the second half.

While Greenbank made up significant ground it was ultimately not enough to break into the top three as he finished with a time of 54.37 seconds, 0.23s behind Markus Thormeyer of Canada, who took bronze.

Once again Australia took the top two spots on the podium, Mitch Larkin's 53.18s earning him gold and teammate Bradley Woodward taking the silver with a time of 53.95s.

Elsewhere, Wales's Xavier Castelli came in just behind Greenbank with a time of 54.60s.
