Former double Olympic gold medallist Rebecca Adlington has confirmed that she will not compete at the next Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.
Adlington, 23, won two Olympic titles four years ago in Beijing but was unable to stand atop the podium at her home Olympics in London, instead adding bronze medals to her collection.
"Rio is out of reach. I'll be 27 by then, and swimming, especially for distance swimmers, is a young person's game," Adlington told the Mail on Sunday.
"If I was a sprinter then I would go to Rio. But I don't have an ounce of sprinting in me, and that's why my Olympics are over."
However, the Mansfield swimmer did say that she wanted to race at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.
