Rebecca Adlington has vowed to battle for the gold medal in the women's 800m freestyle at London 2012.

The Beijing 2008 champion, who picked up a bronze medal in the 400m last night, said that she will "fight like hell" to increase Great Britain's medal haul.

She told BBC Sport: "I'm going to have to fight like hell to get a medal. I know the 800m is going to be a fight, exactly the same as the 400m.

"I know it's going to be extremely tough but I am going to try my absolute hardest, just as I did on Sunday, and hopefully the crowd can pick me up as they did then and I can pick up that performance."

Adlington, who finished third in the 400m behind winner Camille Muffat of France and runner-up Allison Schmitt of the United States, went on to hail praise the home support.

"You can't make out what they are saying, but you can hear the buzz and the noise," she added. "It inspired me and definitely helped me - it was amazing I got to experience that.

"The crowd was brilliant, but I didn't want to look up. I didn't want to get too overwhelmed, because I had a job to do. Yes, it's an Olympics, but it's just another swim. I'm just diving in and doing what I do every single day of my life."

The women's 800m freestyle takes place on August 2.
