Heather Watson up against Tsvetana Pironkova in Australian Open

Heather Watson of Great Britain is to play Tsvetana Pironkova of Bulgaria in round one of the Australian Open.

Great Britain's Heather Watson has been drawn against Tsvetana Pironkova of Bulgaria in the first round of the Australian Open.

Watson, ranked 49th in the world, will be the only female representing Britain in the finals in the absence of the injured Laura Robson.

World number one and defending champion Serena Williams is up against unseeded Belgian Alison van Uytvanck, while second seed Maria Sharapova will play a qualifier.

The stand-out tie of round one is the clash between two-time champion Victoria Azarenka and American Sloane Stephens, who were involved in a controversial match two years ago in which Azarenka called a suspicious injury time-out.

The Australian Open will take place between January 19 and February 1.
