Serena Williams has claimed that her comfortable 6-1 6-2 victory over Caroline Garcia proves that she is in with a good chance of French Open glory.

The odds-on tournament favourite, who has now won 68 of her last 72 matches, needed just 62 minutes to defeat her 19-year-old opponent in round two in Paris on Wednesday.

"It's important for me to win easily," said Williams. "It's also important for me to play well. If I play well, it will bode well for me at Roland Garros."

Williams hit 27 winners and produced just nine unforced errors.
