Team GB's women's water polo team lost by the odd goal in 13 during their preliminary round Olympic encounter against Russia this evening.
Francesca Painter-Snell got Team GB off to good start when she broke the deadlock with seven minutes on the clock. However, the Russians were soon level courtesy of Nadezhda Fedotova.
A brace from Ekaterina Prokofyeva put Russia in command before the end of the first quarter, while a late goal from Chloe Wilcox kept Britain in contention.
Team GB were level at six goals apiece by the end of the second quarter thanks to two goals from Angie Winstanley-Smith, while Fiona McCann also added a solo goal.
Russia's goals came from Alexandra Antonova and Olga Beliaeva.
Beliaeva scored the only goal of the third quarter to put Russia back in front heading into the final few minutes.
Despite Winstanley-Smith completing her hat-trick, Britain were unable to prevent Prokofyeva from winning the game for Russia.
