The Sochi Winter Olympics opening ceremony has seen a high-profile mistake take place, as one of the Olympic rings failed to open in the venue.

During the opening stages of the ceremony, which also saw the Cyrillic alphabet read out while important Russian aspects were displayed, the Olympic symbol, which boasts five interlocking rings, appeared inside the Fisht Olympic Stadium. However, one of the rings did not form.
