Liverpool are allegedly behind Newcastle United in the race to sign Napoli defender Kalidou Koulibaly during the next transfer window.

Liverpool have allegedly tabled a lower offer for Napoli defender Kalidou Koulibaly than Newcastle United.

Despite his status at the Italian outfit, Koulibaly is likely to be sold during the next transfer window as Napoli look to boost their financial position.

Although Liverpool sit top of the Premier League table, journalist Paolo Esposito says that Newcastle United, who could be taken over by a Saudi Arabia-based consortium, are prepared to pay the most money for the Senegal international.

Speaking to Area Napoli, Esposito said: "I believe he will go to the Premier League where there is Newcastle in pole position.

"Then there are Manchester United and Liverpool, who have much more charm than Newcastle, but offer less, both in salary and in transfer fees."

Napoli are likely to demand in excess of £60m for Koulibaly.
