London Irish coach Brian Smith frustrated by referee display

London Irish coach Brian Smith hits out at the referee after seeing his side lose 46-19 at Wasps.

London Irish coach Brian Smith has criticised the performance of the referee following his side's 46-19 defeat to Wasps.

The Exiles suffered a sixth consecutive loss in the Aviva Premiership on Sunday as they were comfortably beaten in Wasps's first match at the Ricoh Arena.

Despite a gulf in the scoreline, Smith believes that the officiating damaged his team's chances during the match.

"I don't want to take anything away from Wasps, as this was their day, but we have a frustrated group of players in the dressing room," he is quoted as saying by BBC Sport.

"When a young ref gets a crack in front of a big crowd, you are concerned. The penalty count was 10-2 at half time and you have to hope it levels out, but it didn't. But you just have to wear it and move on."

London Irish are back in league action on Boxing Day when they host fellow strugglers London Welsh.
