Gordon Tietjens: "We weren't good enough"

New Zealand rugby sevens head coach Gordon Tietjens concedes that his side were not good enough to win the gold medal at the Commonwealth Games last night.

New Zealand rugby sevens head coach Sir Gordon Tietjens has conceded that his side were not good enough to win the gold medal at the Commonwealth Games last night.

The All Blacks fell to their first ever defeat at the Games in the final at Ibrox as fierce rivals South Africa created history with a 17-12 victory, ending a 29-match undefeated streak in the competition.

Tietjens, who has been in charge of the side since 1994 and already amassed four gold medals as coach, expressed his pride in the team, but admitted that they weren't at their best over the whole weekend.

"We're obviously a little disappointed that we couldn't come away with the gold medal, but I'm certainly very proud of my side. It was a gutsy performance, but on the night we weren't good enough," he told Sports Mole.

"I felt that the first game was probably our best game. We probably lacked fluency at times over the two days. We put a lot together that was really good and at other times we were pretty average.

"In saying that, still getting to the final - I think the two best teams fought out the final in what was a pretty tough, physical and testing final for both teams."

Tietjens has led his side to 12 IRB World Series titles and two World Cups during his illustrious tenure.
