Mike McCarthy "confident" in Seneca Wallace

Green Bay Packers coach Mike McCarthy backs veteran quarterback Seneca Wallace to provide adequate cover for Aaron Rodgers.

Green Bay Packers coach Mike McCarthy has backed new signing Seneca Wallace to provide adequate cover for first-choice quarterback Aaron Rodgers.

The Packers signed Wallace yesterday just days after he was released by the San Francisco 49ers, who claimed that the 33-year-old was planning to retire.

McCarthy believes that the veteran will provide valuable experience and is confident that he can led his side to victory should Rodgers pick up an injury.

"Seneca Wallace has been in the league 11 years. He's been a backup quarterback primarily his whole career," McCarthy told reporters.

"He clearly understands the role, has a lot of experience in an out of systems. Just talking football with him last night, I felt confident that he'll be ready to play Sunday. That was part of our conversation."

The Packers will face Wallace's former team, the 49ers, in their opening match of the season on Sunday.
