Ray Rice assault case
In February 2014, Ravens running back Ray Rice was arrested after a physical altercation with fiancée Janay Palmer at a New Jersey casino.
On March 27, Rice was indicted by a grand jury of third-degree aggravated assault, but he went on to marry Palmer the following day. The NFL responded to his indictment by issuing him with a two-game ban for the 2014 season, while the criminal charges were dropped.
In September, new video footage of the incident came to light, showing Rice punching Palmer as they shared an elevator. Rice's contract with the Ravens was terminated, but controversy continued to reign as it was alleged that the NFL had seen the video months before it was made public.
