Luxembourg runner Charline Mathias believes that her gold medal in the 800m at the European Games can be a springboard to qualify for the Olympics in Rio next summer.
Mathias posted a competition-best 2:01.77 to edge out Albanian Luiza Gega with 2:02.36 and Anastasiya Komarova of Azerbaijan on 2:02.50 - her personal best.
"I am running again tomorrow, but I think I have got a big chance now to qualify for the Rio Olympics in 2016," he told reporters.
"With this victory, I recorded a good result for my country.
"The race was hard but also fun. For the first 700m the other athletes were in front of me, but in the last 100m I gathered my strength and came first."
Mathias also beat her country's record in the women's 800m.
