After two weeks of competition in Moscow, August 3 1980 saw the 20th Summer Olympics come to an end with a memorable closing ceremony at the Grand Arena of the Central Lenin Stadium.
The build up to the Games had been marred by numerous countries announcing that they would boycott the event as a protest to the Soviet Union's invasion of Afghanistan, while others competed under the Olympics flag rather than their national colours.
The Games had featured a record 203 events, and saw 36 new world record set, as well as 39 European records broken and 74 new Olympics records posted.
The closing ceremony got underway in the evening, and began with the parade of the athletes, alongside the flagbearers from the competing nations.
As the USA were among the countries to boycott the Games, the traditional handover from the current host to the next host did not take place, although the Los Angeles city flag was raised, alongside the Soviet and Greek flags.
Perhaps the most memorable moment of the closing ceremony though came when the Games' mascot, a bear named Misha, entered the stadium.
Misha paraded around the stadium as the athletes exited, while members of the audience performed a card stunt depicting the mascot shedding a tear of sadness at the end of the Olympics.
As is tradition, there were a number of artistic performances, including the singing of the finale song "Farewell, Moscow", the arrival of a number of giant Matryoshka dolls and a performance from the Massed Military Bands, as well as displays from gymnasts and acrobats.
The ceremony was hailed a success, and brought an end to a successful Games for the host nation, who finished at the top of the medal table with 80 golds, going some way to repairing the damage of the boycott controversy.
The Games returned to Russia earlier this year when the Winter Olympics were held in Sochi, resulting in a tribute to Misha's tears when the 2014 polar bear mascot shed a tear while putting the flame out at the Fischt Olympic Stadium.
