Eilish McColgan has been forced to settle for silver in the women's 10,000m at the European Championship.

The British distance runner won the same discipline at the Commonwealth Games earlier this month, claiming the biggest title of her career.

Success in Birmingham strengthened the feeling that McColgan was one of the contenders for gold in Munich, but she was to be denied by an outstanding run from Yasemin Can.

The 25-year-old, who prevailed in the same event six years ago, had tracked a front-running McColgan alongside two others, and the expectation was that the quartet would wait until the closing stages to launch a kick for home.

However, the Turkish representative surged clear with approximately seven laps remaining, soon establishing a race-winning gap between McColgan and Lonah Chemtai Salpeter.

Given the distance that remained, one of the trailing pair had been expected to make an attempt to reduce the increasing deficit, but it soon became apparent that Can had the race and gold medal wrapped up.

Can eventually crossed the line in 30:32.57, nine seconds ahead of McColgan who deserves credit for surging clear of Isreal's Salpeter on the final lap.
