The San Antonio Spurs have hired veteran WNBA player Becky Hammon to join their coaching staff as she becomes the second female to be hired as an NBA assistant.
Hammon announced that she would retire after 16 seasons in the WNBA at the end of the current campaign, and during an injury-hit season last year she was invited to attend practices with San Antonio.
"I very much look forward to the addition of Becky Hammon to our staff. Having observed her working with our team this past season, I'm confident her basketball IQ, work ethic and interpersonal skills will be a great benefit to the Spurs," head coach Gregg Popovich said, ESPN reports.
Hammon is the second female to be hired as an NBA assistant after Lisa Boyer served on John Lucas's staff during the 2001-02 season, although it is understood that the latter was a 'volunteer assistant coach'.
