Top welterweight boxer Floyd Mayweather Jnr pleads guilty to charges of domestic violence and harassment in a Las Vegas court and is given a 90-day jail sentence.

The world's top pound-for-pound fighter, Floyd Mayweather Jnr, has been jailed for 90 days for assaulting his ex-girlfriend Josie Harris in Septemeber 2010.

The American pleaded guilty to the charge at a Las Vegas court and was also sentenced to 100 hours of community service and a $2,500 fine.

Prosecutors said that Mayweather's previous history meant jail time was appropriate.

"He just continually gets himself into trouble and he is able to get himself out of it as well," Lisa Luzaich, prosecuting, told Judge Melissa Saragosa.

"Essentially it is because he is who he is and is able to get away with everything. The only thing that's going to get this man's attention is incarceration."

Mayweather's plea does, however, mean that he will not face a trial on felony allegations that he hit Ms Harris and threatened two of their children.

The 34-year-old must report to jail on January 6.
