The 28-year-old won the event in comfortable fashion in a time of 4:13:05, despite suffering a puncture towards the end of the race.

Thomas's lead over New Zealands's Jack Bauer and England's Scott Thwaites was so great that he still managed to win at a canter.

Bauer clinched the silver medal as he just edged out Thwaites on the line, with the Englishman forced to settle for bronze in a time of 4:14:26.

The success was Thomas's second medal of the Games after he won bronze in the individual time trial.
