Jack Laugher wins gold for England in 1m

Jack Laugher wins diving gold for Team England in the 1m springboard event at the Commonwealth Games.

Jack Laugher has successfully retained his title in the 1m springboard event at the Commonwealth Games.

The 23-year-old was a class apart during the competition and eventually took gold with a score of 438.00 across his six dives - more than 25 points clear of his nearest competitor.

Laugher, who specialises in the 3m, managed a session-best score of 76.50 for his inward 2-1/2 somersaults and scored at least 70 points on all six of his dives.

Teammate Ross Haslam had been in line for a silver medal but scored just 30 points for his penultimate jump, the back 2-1/2 somersaults, and fell completely out of contention.

Silver went the way of the home nation and 22-year-old James Connor, who made certain of the medal with a 75.00 for his final dive, the forward 3-1/2 somersaults.

Scotland's James Heatly - 3m champion at the 2015 European Games - did enough to secure bronze, his total of 399.25 including a 74.25 for his forward 3-1/2 somersaults.

Haslam's older brother Jack Haslam also participated in the competition but could only finish 10th after a score of 325.05.
