Atletico Madrid are allegedly keeping a close eye on Alejandro Garnacho's situation at Manchester United amid suggestions that he could be sold this year.

Atletico Madrid are reportedly keeping a close eye on Alejandro Garnacho's situation at Manchester United.

Garnacho has only been a bit-part player under Red Devils head coach Ruben Amorim, with the 20-year-old struggling to adapt to the Portuguese's new 3-4-3 system at Old Trafford.

Lacklustre performances in training led to Garnacho being left out of the squad for the Manchester derby on December 15, and he has not started since, with his last four Premier League appearances coming off the bench.

The Argentina international struggled to make his mark in substitute outings against Bournemouth, Wolverhampton Wanderers and Newcastle United in the Premier League, but he provided an assist in Sunday's 2-2 draw with Liverpool, setting up Amad Diallo for Man United's second at Anfield.

Garnacho has a contract with the 20-time English champions until June 2028, but it has been suggested that he could be sold in the near future for financial reasons.

Atletico 'interested in re-signing Garnacho'

The forward was a part of Atletico's academy between 2015 and 2020 before moving to Man United, and he impressed for the English club's youth team before making his senior debut in 2022.

Garnacho has played 115 times for Man United, scoring 23 goals and registering 13 assists in all competitions, while he is their leading goalscorer this season with eight goals and four assists in 29 appearances.

Amorim generally likes his number 10s to play as narrow wingers, though, while Garnacho's best work often comes when he has space to run at full-backs, which has created a difficult situation.

Man United are not believed to be actively looking to sell Garnacho, but due to the financial restrictions, it is believed that serious offers for him would have to be considered.

Should Man United sell Garnacho?

"Good point at Anfield to start the year. The last few weeks have not been easy, but it's good to start the year like this and try to build from this," Garnacho posted on his Instagram account after the draw with Liverpool.

Amorim has been asking for more from Garnacho, and the Portuguese would have been delighted with what he saw from the forward off the bench at Anfield.

It will now be fascinating to see whether he is considered for a start against Arsenal in the FA Cup on Sunday afternoon, with changes expected ahead of a Premier League clash with Southampton on January 16.

Man United must look to keep hold of Garnacho, as he is capable of developing into a superstar for the Red Devils, and this difficult spell should stand him in good stead moving forward.
