Who is Arsenal's player of the season?

The Sports Mole team pick who they believe is Arsenal's player of the season for the 2019-20 campaign.

The 2019-20 campaign has been a tumultuous one for Arsenal, even before the coronavirus pandemic wreaked havoc on the sporting calendar.

The Gunners won just six of their opening 26 games before stringing together their best run of the season immediately prior to play being stopped, winning three games in a row.

Unai Emery has been replaced by former player Mikel Arteta in the Emirates Stadium dugout and, while there has been an upturn in form as a result of that change, Arsenal remain ninth in the Premier League table, eight points off fourth and having already seen their hopes of Champions League qualification via the Europa League dashed.

Nonetheless, the North Londoners still boast some of the most talented players in the league, and here the Sports Mole team select who they think has been Arsenal's player of the season so far.

In an overwhelmingly disappointing campaign for Arsenal, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has stood out head and shoulders above the rest of his teammates. A tally of 17 Premier League goals puts him second to only Jamie Vardy in the top-scorers list, while 20 across all competitions is double his nearest challenger within the Arsenal squad.

The fact that only Liverpool's Sadio Mane has won more points for his side than Aubameyang this season speaks volumes; take away the 16 points his goals have earned Arsenal in 2019-20 and the Gunners would be sitting in 19th place. Rumours are abound regarding his future, but he is one player Arsenal simply cannot afford to lose.

This is not a difficult choice for me. The 30-year-old has been in terrific form during the 2019-20 campaign, scoring 20 times in 32 appearances. A record of 17 Premier League goals for a side that has struggled for consistency is very impressive and his ability as a goalscorer cannot be questioned.

Bernd Leno perhaps deserves a mention as the goalkeeper has been in good form between the sticks, but it is very tough to look past Aubameyang, who could well be on his way out of the club during this summer's transfer window.

Given their Premier League position and relatively early exit from the Europa League, few players have stood out for Arsenal this season. The logical choice has to be Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, who has contributed 20 goals from 32 appearances.

Although some would have expected the Gabon international to possess a better strike-rate, you have to take into consideration that just half of his outings have come down the middle of Arsenal's attack. Despite just having one assist to his name, that will partly be down to the poor form of his teammates in the final third.

Not only does the Gabon international boast an impressive record in front of goal this season - 17 goals in 26 matches - but he has also highlighted his selfless side by playing out wide when required to get the best out of others.

My Arsenal player of the season has to be Bernd Leno. It was a choice between him or Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, but Leno has proved time and time again how vital he is to this Arsenal team with 104 saves this season.

It is a shame that his clean sheet record doesn't accurately reflect how good of a goalkeeper he is. Arsenal would be so much worse off without him and he undoubtedly gets my vote for their player of the season.
