Per Mertesacker: 'Arsenal were lucky to beat Crystal Palace'

Arsenal defender Per Mertesacker admits that they were "lucky" not to concede a late equaliser against Crystal Palace in their 2-1 victory at Selhurst Park.

Per Mertesacker has admitted that Arsenal were lucky to come away with a win in their Premier League match against Crystal Palace this weekend.

The Gunners were 2-0 up at Selhurst Park when Glenn Murray pulled a goal back for the hosts before coming close to an equaliser in stoppage time.

The German defender told the club's website: "At the end they tried to put us some pressure and get some strikers on.

"They nearly scored the equaliser so we were a bit lucky at the end. Overall, we are absolutely delighted with the three points and we move on.

"They have pace up front and good headers of the ball too. They nearly scored in the first half and at the end they had quite a few chances. Sometimes you lose games, especially at the end. We were lucky today but that was a bit of a warning for us not to switch off too early."

The result lifted Arsenal back up to third in the Premier League table.
