Arsenal maintain their 100% start to the Premier League season as goals from Gabriel Jesus and Gabriel Martinelli earn a 2-1 win over struggling Aston Villa.

Arsenal have maintained their 100% start to the new Premier League season courtesy of a 2-1 victory over out-of-form Aston Villa.

The league leaders dominated the chances in the opening half an hour before finally breaking the deadlock through summer signing Gabriel Jesus.

The Brazilian striker's effort means that he has now directly contributed to six goals in his opening five Premier League games for the Gunners, breaking a club record previously held by Mesut Ozil.

Arsenal's perfect start to the campaign looked in danger when Aston Villa equalised in remarkable fashion with a little over 15 minutes remaining.

Douglas Luiz, who had come off the bench less than a minute before, scored directly from a corner to restore parity and threaten to take points off the Gunners for the first time this season.

However, Arsenal were back in front just three minutes later when Gabriel Martinelli converted Bukayo Saka's cross, and that proved to be the winner for Mikel Arteta's side.

The result means that Arsenal have now won their opening five top-flight league games for only the fourth time in their history, and the first time since 2004-05.

Aston Villa, meanwhile, remain languishing in the relegation zone with questions continuing to be asked of manager Steven Gerrard following a run of just three wins in their last 16 league games.
