Former Arsenal captain Sol Campbell has claimed that the club must spend significant money during the January transfer window if they are to have a successful season.

The Gunners, who currently sit sixth in the Premier League table, have been linked with potential moves for David Villa and Wilfried Zaha in recent days.

"January is a very critical time," Campbell told BBC Sport. "They should find some money, get some top players in and go for it.

"If they don't get it right in January then they can just forget the rest of the season."

Campbell made 146 league appearances for the Gunners over two spells between 2001 and 2010.
