Graeme Souness: 'Tim Sherwood's Aston Villa sacking not a shock'

Former Liverpool midfielder Graeme Souness believes that Tim Sherwood's sacking at Aston Villa was not a surprise, as the side currently sit bottom of the Premier League.

Former Liverpool midfielder Graeme Souness has suggested that Tim Sherwood's sacking at Aston Villa was not a surprise.

Sherwood was relieved of his duties at Villa Park earlier today, with the Villans currently bottom of the Premier League table, and Souness believes that the club's results had not been good enough under the former Tottenham Hotspur head coach.

"I'm not surprised," Souness told Sky Sports News. "The papers have been talking about it, Tim himself has had questions about it. He spent £50m in the summer and we've not seen any return.

"Aston Villa are one of those clubs that feel they should be up nearer the top than the bottom. They are a big club and could be a very big club. They've been champions of Europe. So I am not surprised. I just think it's the way the game rolls.

"You've got to get results. They're a club that will now be thinking, 'We could get relegated this season' so they've made the change now."

Villa will take on Southampton in the League Cup on Wednesday evening.
