Lionel Messi vs. Celta Vigo

Sports Mole looks at Lionel Messi's record against Celta Vigo ahead of his side's trip to Balaidos on Tuesday evening.

Barcelona can move to within four points of the La Liga title with victory over Celta Vigo at Balaidos on Tuesday evening.

The Catalan giants are still yet to taste defeat this season and have now gone a Spanish top-flight record 39 matches since last dropping three points.

Barca boss Ernesto Valverde has hinted that he may leave out some key men against Celta, however, with the game coming just four days before a Copa del Rey final meeting with Sevilla, meaning that Lionel Messi could be given the night off.

Valverde should think twice before dropping the five-time Ballon d'Or winner from his starting lineup, though, as he boasts an impressive record in past meetings with this week's opponents, which Sports Mole outlines below.


Messi vs. Celta

Messi has featured against Celta on 13 previous occasions, including in this season's Copa del Rey last 16 when netting twice and setting up another in a 5-0 second-leg win.

That came a month after the Argentina international scored in a surprise 2-2 draw between the sides in the reverse La Liga clash at Camp Nou, leaving him with five goals in his last three meetings with the Celts.

In fact, Messi has scored in more than half of those 13 previous encounters, but he has never previously scored in both league games against Celta in the same season - something he could achieve on Tuesday night if he features.
