Barcelona announce that Sergi Roberto has put pen to paper on a new deal with the club until June 2024.

Barcelona have announced that Sergi Roberto has put pen to paper on a new deal until June 2024.

The Spaniard's previous deal with the Catalan giants had been due to expire at the end of the season, and there had been a host of speculation surrounding his future at Camp Nou.

However, on Friday, Barcelona revealed that an agreement had been reached over a deal until June 2024.

"FC Barcelona and Sergi Roberto have reached an agreement to extend the player's contract through to 2024. The buyout clause has been set at €400m (£352.9m)," read a statement on Barcelona's official website.

Roberto has been a regular for Barcelona during the 2022-23 campaign, featuring on 23 occasions in all competitions, contributing three goals and three assists in the process.

The Spaniard has scored three times and registered one assist in 14 La Liga appearances this term, while he has also played nine times combined in the Copa del Rey, Champions League, Europa League and the Spanish Super Cup.

Last month, Barcelona boss Xavi said that he wanted to keep Roberto at the club for "many years".

"I see Sergi Roberto in training, doing well in matches... and yet still he is always criticised. I don't know how. He's a bigger Barca fan than the flag itself," the head coach told reporters at the time.

"I saw it with [Carlos] Marchena in the national team too. The most unfair criticism that I have ever seen in my career.

"Sergi Roberto is one of the most unfairly criticised players that I have ever seen. He always does well, in whatever position. He's very altruistic, a big Cule, and has an excellent attitude. I want him to renew and stay many years here."

Roberto has won six La Liga titles, six Copa del Rey trophies and two Champions League crowns during his time in the first team at Barcelona.

In all competitions, he has represented the Catalan outfit on 339 occasions, scoring 15 goals and contributing 40 assists, and the midfielder will now spend at least another season at Camp Nou.

Roberto started Barcelona's 1-0 defeat to Almeria in La Liga last weekend, but he was only a late substitute against Real Madrid in the Copa del Rey on Thursday night.

Sergio Busquets, though, has allegedly decided to leave the club on a free transfer this summer.

The 34-year-old only has a deal until the end of June, and it has been claimed that he has informed club chiefs that he will be seeking pastures new when his contract expires.
