Malky Mackay: 'I expected to be sacked over weekend'

Cardiff City boss Malky Mackay reveals that he expected to be sacked over the weekend.

Cardiff City boss Malky Mackay has revealed that he expected to be sacked by the club over the weekend.

The Scot was told by owner Vincent Tan last week that he had to resign or face being dismissed from his post following a disagreement over transfers.

Mackay, who made the decision not to quit, recently claimed that he was keen to sign three new players in January, but Tan countered those comments by insisting that no money was available.

Cardiff responded to the saga on Sunday night when chairman Mehmet Dalman issued a statement confirming that Mackay would stay in charge "for the foreseeable future and will be until something else happens".

"I did feel I was going to lose my job on the weekend," he told reporters. "The email deeply upset me. I declined to resign and expected to be sacked over the weekend.

"I'm proud to be the manager here and I think I should be the manager here. I will keep doing what I'm doing and if someone wants to do something different that's up to them."

Cardiff continue their Premier League campaign on Boxing Day when they travel to Southampton.
