Ashley Cole to break England record tonight

Ashley Cole will break the English record, set by David Beckham and Peter Shilton, for most international tournament match appearances if he features against Ukraine tonight.

Chelsea defender Ashley Cole will break the England record for most tournament match appearances if he features in tonight's Group D decider against Euro 2012 co-hosts Ukraine.

The 31-year-old made his international debut under Sven-Goran Eriksson in 2001, as England beat Albania 3-1 in Tirana.

Cole made his first tournament appearance at World Cup 2002 in Japan and South Korea, where he was present for all but 15 minutes of the Three Lions' five matches.

He was then an ever-present as England reached the quarter-finals of Euro 2004, World Cup 2006, and the last 16 at World Cup 2010.

Tonight's match is expected to provide Cole with his 21st tournament appearance, which would see him eclipse the achievements of previous record-holders David Beckham and Peter Shilton.

Cole has been capped 96 times at senior international level.
