England's Frank Lampard believes that the suggestion that he and Steven Gerrard can't play together on the international stage is a "myth".

Chelsea midfielder Frank Lampard has rubbished claims that he and Liverpool's Steven Gerrard cannot play together for England.

Lampard and Gerrard have faced plenty of criticism during their international careers for failing to reach the standards that they set for their respective clubs, with some suggesting that their styles are too similar to work together.

However, Lampard believes that it is more to do with the quality of opposition and formations they play on the international stage than either player's ability to play with each other.

"I think it's a myth," Lampard said. "There was a lot of talk about Stevie coming to Chelsea years ago and I can't see that we wouldn't have been able to play together if we'd have been playing regularly.

"Going in and playing big tournaments at 4-4-2 at times, it's not easy in midfield, when you're outnumbered, because you're not getting outnumbered against mugs, you're outnumbered against top players."

Lampard has scored 28 times in 95 appearances for England, while Gerrard has managed 19 goals in 102 caps.
