Jose Mourinho backs Luis Figo's FIFA presidency bid

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho backs Luis Figo's FIFA presidency bid, describing it as a "great step forward for football".

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has insisted that Luis Figo's FIFA presidency bid is a "great step forward for football".

Former Barcelona and Real Madrid winger Figo announced his candidacy on Wednesday and promised to change the image of football's governing body after three terms under Sepp Blatter's heavily-criticised leadership.

Mourinho, who managed his Portuguese compatriot at Inter Milan, feels that the 42-year-old would be well suited to the political role.

"Luis Figo's candidacy is a great step forward for football. His career over many years grants a better future for FIFA," he told reporters.

"I believe in his character and determination, as well as his passion for the game.

"He will be a president focused on football and its general improvement, acting closely with all federations."

The two-time World Footballer of the Year is expected to face competition from Jerome Champagne, Prince Ali Bin Al Hussein and David Ginola, as well as Blatter when the election takes place in May.
