Wayne Rooney's top five England goals

Sports Mole picks out some of Wayne Rooney's best goals for England following his record-breaking 50th goal against Switzerland.

Wayne Rooney's goal from the penalty spot in England's 2-0 win over Switzerland in a Euro 2016 qualifier has made the Manchester United striker the nation's record goalscorer, beating the long-standing record of 49 held by Sir Bobby Charlton.

The captain's total now stands at 50, 12 years and 107 appearances after he made his international debut, so Sports Mole takes a look back at some of the stand-out strikes from the forward.

1. September 2003 vs. Macedonia

It was in a Euro 2004 qualifier in Skopje that a then 17-year-old Rooney opened his account for England, netting the equaliser in what went on to be a 2-1 win for the Three Lions.

David Beckham played the ball forward to Emile Heskey, who knocked it down for Rooney to thump in from the edge of the box, hitting it on the half-volley on just his sixth appearance for his country.

As a result of his first goal, Rooney remains England's youngest ever goalscorer, having found the back of the net 48 days short of his 18th birthday.

2. September 2004 vs. Croatia

Rooney was on the scoresheet twice during England's 4-2 win over Croatia at Euro 2004 in Portugal, just four days after netting a brace against Switzerland at the same tournament.

It was the second of his goals that really caught the eye though, with Beckham providing the assist again to set the striker up for a powerful long-range low drive, which left the keeper with no chance.

Rooney picked up his 16th cap in the match in Lisbon, while taking his international goals total to nine just over a year after making his debut.

3. October 2007 vs. Russia

Rooney's volley from the edge of the box in the Luzhniki Stadium was a rare highlight in England's ill-fated Euro 2008 qualification campaign under Steven McClaren.

Michael Owen brought a long ball forward down with a header just outside the penalty area, nodding it into the path his strike partner, leaving Rooney to launch the ball into the roof of the net.

Despite the impressive finish, Russia came back to take a 2-1 win, and England failed to qualify for the tournament in Austria and Switzerland, costing McClaren his job.

4. June 2013 vs. Brazil

Possibly the most eye-catching goal Rooney has scored in an England shirt came in a friendly at Wembley against Brazil just over two years ago, as he curled the ball in from 30 yards out, making it look effortless.

The Manchester United man got the ball just inside Brazil's half moments after a chance for the visitors was cleared at the other end.

Despite having a couple of options ahead of him, Rooney spotted his moment, cutting inside from the left flank before curling the ball into the top right for a remarkable solo goal.

5. June 2014 vs. Uruguay

While maybe not the most spectacular strike in Rooney's collection, the forward's goal against Uruguay at the 2014 World Cup showed real commitment, as he battled to get on the end of a low cross from Glen Johnson.

Johnson did just enough to slice the ball past Edinson Cavani in towards the goal, with Rooney still on the edge of the box as it was played in. The keeper came off his line to try to collect it, but Rooney muscled his way to the ball, diverting it away from the hands of the diving keeper and into the bottom corner.

In addition to being a well-taken strike, it was also Rooney's first goal at a World Cup in his third campaign with England, and his 40th international goal.
